In
January 2005 Paul and Maren headed to Ecuador-- Paul for a short
visit and telephone system repair and Maren for five months of
student teaching. During those cold, winter days with an
emptier than normal house, Mary set a goal-- sew up the stack of
pre-cut pants, shorts, and skirts she had gotten at the warehouse.
There were beautiful fabrics including corduroys and cottons.
For two weeks Mary kept her sewing machine
whirring. It was like a marathon, and the end was attained.
There was a grand total of 36 garments!
Just months later, we packed them in our
suitcases and saw them delivered to orphanages and individuals.
The long pants are most likely being put to use right now, for there
is definitely a need for them. It is quite common to see
Russian orphans dressed in shorts with tights under them in the
middle of winter. Maybe these will help keep some little legs
warm... and open more doors for Christ in the future.
Are you interested in a
good winter project? Sewing these garments is relatively easy
and fast—even for beginners! Our friend, Linda Boss, provided
the idea and the pattern, and we were able to take off. We welcome
emails from perspective sewers out there!
